Think there isn't a difference? Guess again. If you're looking for an engagement ring, you need to know what each term refers to. .

The shape of the diamond refers to the silhouette and the look of the diamond. The most popular cut is the round brilliant (above left) because it creates a strong stone and maximizes sparkle. A round cut is also easier to insure than say a pear shape (above right) because a pear shaped diamond is more fragile. One of the drawbacks the round diamond its popularity makes it more expensive.

After the round brilliant, the most popular shape is the princess (above far left). Some other popular shapes are the radiant, the oval and the marquis (named from left to right).

The cut refers to the diamond's proportionality with the most desirable cut being 'Excellent' followed by 'Very Good.' A proper cut maximizes the brilliance, lustre and scintillation of the diamond.

If the diamond is cut too deep or too shallow the diamond will not reflect light properly and appear murky and dull, even if the diamond itself is of exceptional quality.
